I have transplanted three dwarf banana trees in pots. Now they have pups. However, none have produced bananas. I live in Grass Valley, Northern California. It's very hot in summer and very cold in winter. I just watched your video on transplanting banana pups. I also have a small house rabbit who uses Timothy hay, and I'll start using it with her poop as mulch. Any suggestions for producing bananas on dwarf trees? Thanks. Shirley

"Chunk of the mother root" = Corm. It is white and bulbous similar to the base of an onion. Your pup should contain ideally about 15-20% of the base mother corm as the corm acts as the brain of the plant. This will not harm the mother plant instead it will only stimulate growth of the mother. To give you an idea exactly of how resilient banana trees are, in hawaii to control weevils which attack the banana trees corm, They pull up the plant violently and quickly with no regard to the base or corm and machete off the outer base of the corm and carelessly remove all affected areas and replant. Imagine shaving your head with a machete... Then the tree is stuck back in the ground and takes off with a new breath of fresh air. These trees are incredibly resilient.

Aren't the mycorrhizae ultraviolet sensitive ? If so exposing them to sunlight will stunt or kill the mycorrhizae and waste your $ & time .

Well I must say this was certainly interesting to watch. I never seem to get enough of the way North Americans plant Bananas. I grew up as the daughter of a Preacher who was a Banana Farmer in the Southern Caribbean islands. The tools the gentle man used to dig up the Banana Sucker as we say looks like a Shovel. We use something called a Spade or Scoop which is long and narrow made of stainless steel and very durable. Especially when you are digging 3 feet deep Banana holes to plant hundreds of Banana Suckers at a time. This kind looks to be from Central America. We have Volcanic soil that makes our Bananas get huge and comes in a variety. Bananas are different than its cousin The Plantain pronounced ( Plan-tin) as we say. This type looks like what we called Green Figs. They are usually tiny like half of a normal Banana. Now I grow Topical house plants in Canada and just got a Rojo Red or Zebrina Banana plant. Very nice video enjoyed the new info. Cheers Charleen.
