Curcumin, a bioactive ingredient in turmeric, exhibits over 150 potentially therapeutic activities, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, and anti-cancer properties that have been intensely studied.
What Makes Curcumin Such Potent Medicine?
Researchers have found a number of different mechanisms of action for curcumin, and part of the answer as to why curcumin appears to be such potent medicine is because it can:
Modulate about 700 of your genes
Positively modulate more than 160 different physiological pathways3
Make your cells’ membranes more orderly4
Affect signaling molecules.5 For example, curcumin has been shown to directly interact with:
Inflammatory molecules Cell survival proteins Histone
Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV1) integrase and protease DNA and RNA Various carrier proteins and metal ions
As a result of these (and potentially other) effects, curcumin has the ability to benefit your health in a variety of ways, and prevent a number of different diseases. According to a study published in the Natural Product Reports6 in 2011, curcumin can be therapeutic for:
Lung and liver diseases Neurological diseases Metabolic diseases
Autoimmune disorders Cardiovascular diseases Inflammatory diseases7
More specifically, studies8,9 that now number in the hundreds have shown that curcumin and other bioactive compounds in turmeric can:
Support healthy cholesterol levels Prevent low-density lipoprotein oxidation Inhibit platelet aggregation
Suppress thrombosis and myocardial infarction Suppress symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes Suppress symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis
Suppress symptoms of multiple sclerosis Protect against radiation-induced damage and heavy metal toxicity Inhibit HIV replication
Reduce systemic inflammation in obese individuals10 Enhance wound healing Protect against liver damage11
Increase bile secretion Protect against cataracts Protect against pulmonary toxicity and fibrosis
Turmeric May Help Combat Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Inflammatory Conditions
Curcumin is capable of crossing your blood-brain barrier, which is one factor that has led researchers to investigate its potential as a neuroprotective agent for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.12,13
The potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin suggests it may also promote brain health in general. In the case of Alzheimer’s, recent animal research14 has discovered another bioactive ingredient in turmeric, besides curcumin, that adds to its neuroprotective effects.
This compound, called aromatic turmerone, help endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC) to grow, and these stem cells play an important role brain repair and regeneration activities. According to lead author Adele Rueger:15
“While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal.”
Curcumin may also be helpful. Previous research has shown that curcumin helps inhibit the accumulation of destructive beta-amyloids in the brain of Alzheimer’s patients, as well as break up existing plaques associated with the disease. People with Alzheimer’s tend to have higher levels of inflammation in their brains, and curcumin is perhaps best known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties. It can inhibit both the activity and the inflammatory metabolic byproducts of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) and 5-lipooxygenase (5-LOX) enzymes, as well as other enzymes and hormones that modulate inflammation.
Another common condition that can benefit from curcumin’s anti-inflammatory activity is osteoarthritis. Research16 published in 2011 found that patients who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility compared to the control group. Earlier research17 also found that a turmeric extract blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the launch of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.
Curcumin Appears to Be Universally Useful for All Cancers
Among the most exciting benefits of turmeric is its potent anti-cancer activity.18,19 Curcumin actually has the most evidence-based literature20 supporting its use against cancer of any other nutrient, including vitamin D! As noted by Dr. William LaValley—one of the leading natural medicine cancer physicians whom I’ve previously interviewed on this topic—curcumin is unique in that it appears to be universally useful for just about every type of cancer. This is odd, considering the fact that cancer consists of a wide variety of different molecular pathologies. One reason for this universal anti-cancer proclivity is curcumin’s ability to affect multiple molecular targets, via multiple pathways.
Once it gets into a cell, it affects more than 100 different molecular pathways. And, as explained by Dr. LaValley, whether the curcumin molecule causes an increase in activity of a particular molecular target, or decrease/inhibition of activity, studies repeatedly show that the end result is a potent anti-cancer activity. Moreover, curcumin is non-toxic, and does not adversely affect healthy cells, suggesting it selectively targets cancer cells—all of which are clear benefits in cancer treatment. Research has even shown that it works synergistically with certain chemotherapy drugs, enhancing the elimination of cancer cells.

We’ve kept chickens on our Manitoulin Island homestead since 2002, and experience has taught me something that no one made clear to me beforehand. When it comes to chicken coops, a handful of smaller, semi-portable coops are better than one large, permanently anchored house. I call this approach “modularity”, and I’ve worked this ideas into some free plans you can download.
The big problem with permanent chicken houses is that they’re always troublesome and expensive to build. Lack of flexibility means they offer no chance to reduce or expand flock size, either. You’ve got what you’ve got when it comes to coop size. Keeping chickens in one place in a permanent coop turns that area of your yard into a dusty, vegetation-free wasteland. Permanent coops are also difficult to heat with winter sun – an issue that really matters where I live in Canada.
All this is why I’ve come to prefer one or more smaller, semi-portable backyard chicken barns that can be mixed and matched in different ways. We use one to raise day-old chicks, others as production houses for adult birds. Add another house if you want to separate some birds because of disease of bullying.
The modular coop I designed is solid and exceptionally warm in winter because of the clear, solar roof, yet also easily ventilated in summer by hinging open the roof. Simple to build, this design can be moved to new locations when needed. Individual modules can be pulled out of production for a time to break pest cycles, and they're easy to clean without standing in poop.
Although my solar-heated design looks fancy, it’s really only a box made of 5/8-inch plywood with trim. Nothing this substantial could be easier to build.
My design sits on legs that raise the structure off the ground, and there are two reasons for this. First, it keeps the wood of the coop high, dry and away from rot-promoting soil. Raising the height of a chicken house like this also makes it perfect for winter use in areas that get snow. I used 1” diameter galvanized steel pipes for my chicken house legs, but you could also put it on some replaceable 4x4s.
The opportunity to collect eggs without opening the chicken door is one advantage of the clear, hinged solar roof. Simply swivel the top upwards, reach down into whatever nesting box you’re using, then retrieve the eggs. You can also replenish feed and water this way, too.
Although hens can get in an out of a very small door, having a large door makes it easier to move feed and water in from the side if you want, and move out manure when it’s time to clean the houses. In my design nearly one whole side swings outwards, with no lip above the floor level. Manure and bedding is easy to scrape out. There are more details here than I have space for, but you can download free plans for my chicken barn at BaileyLineRoad.com/chickens.
As practical as it is to keep backyard chickens, the real attraction for me is also because these birds are great fun to watch. In a world with too many screens in front of us, it’s refreshing to be entertained by something non-digital for a change. Try it and you’ll understand what they mean by “chicken TV."

Vitamin B7
Vitamin B7, also known as biotin, vitamin H or vitamin B8, is a water-soluble vitamin, required by all organisms. There are eight different forms of biotin, but only one of them, D-biotin, occurs naturally and has full vitamin activity. Biotin can only be synthesized by bacteria, molds, yeasts, algae, and by certain plant species (1, 2). VITAMIN B7 // BIOTIN

In humans, vitamin B7 (biotin) is the coenzyme attached at the active site of five enzymes known as ‘carboxylases’ (3). The attachment of biotin to another molecule, such as a protein (e.g. histone), is known as ‘biotinylation’.
Each carboxylase catalyzes an essential metabolic reaction required for the synthesis of fatty acids, the formation of glucose from sources other than carbohydrates (e.g., amino acids), the catabolism of leucine (an essential amino acid), and the metabolism of certain amino acids, cholesterol, and certain fatty acids (4).
Evidence indicates that biotinylation of histones plays a role in regulating DNA replication and gene expression (‘transcription’) as well as cell division (‘proliferation’) and other cellular responses (5, 6, 7).
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which provides scientific advice to assist policy makers, has confirmed that clear health benefits have been established for the dietary intake of biotin (vitamin B7) in contributing to:
normal macronutrient metabolism;
normal energy yielding metabolism;
the maintenance of normal skin and mucous membranes;
the normal function of the nervous system;
the maintenance of normal hair;
normal psychological functions. VITAMIN B7 // BIOTIN
Disease risk reduction
Birth defects
Research indicates that vitamin B7 (biotin) is broken down more rapidly during pregnancy and that biotin nutritional status declines during the course of pregnancy (6, 8, 9). Although the level of biotin depletion is not severe enough to cause diagnostic signs or symptoms, such observations are sources of concern because biotin deficiency without clinical signs or symptoms (‘subclinical’) has been shown to cause birth defects in several animal species (10).
Currently, it is estimated that at least one third of women develop marginal biotin deficiency during pregnancy (11). Indirect evidence also suggests that marginal biotin deficiency causes birth defects in humans.
The potential risk for abnormal development of the embryo or fetus (‘teratogenesis’) from biotin deficiency makes it prudent to ensure adequate biotin intake throughout pregnancy. Since pregnant women are advised to consume supplemental vitamin B9 (folic acid) prior to and during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects, it would be easy to consume supplemental biotin (at least 30 mcg/day) in the form of a multivitamin that also contains at least 400 mcg folic acid. Toxicity at this level of biotin intake has never been reported (see Safety). VITAMIN B7 // BIOTIN
Other Applications
Please note:
Any dietary or drug treatment with high doses of micronutrients may override the body's own control mechanisms; therefore, micronutrient therapies may be associated with potential side effects and toxicities. High-dosed micronutrients should not be used without medical supervision.
Diabetes mellitus
Research suggests that vitamin B7 (biotin) can improve glucose utilization, which is impaired in diabetes mellitus. Several mechanisms could explain a possible blood glucose-lowering effect of biotin: as a cofactor of enzymes required for fatty acid synthesis, biotin may increase the utilization of glucose for fat synthesis. Biotin has been found to stimulate a liver enzyme (‘glucokinase’) that increases synthesis of glycogen, the storage form of glucose. Biotin has also been found to stimulate the secretion of insulin in the pancreas of rats, which also has the effect of lowering blood glucose (12). An effect on cellular glucose transporters (GLUT) is under investigation.
In one human study, blood vitamin B7 (biotin) levels were significantly lower in 43 patients with type 2 diabetes than in non-diabetic control subjects, and lower fasting blood glucose levels were associated with higher blood biotin levels. After one month of biotin supplementation (9,000 mcg/day), fasting blood glucose levels decreased by an average of 45% (13).
In contrast, a study in ten type 2 diabetics and seven non-diabetic controls reported that biotin supplementation (15,000 mcg/day) for 28 days did not decrease fasting blood glucose levels in either group (14).
Additionally, a few studies have shown that co-supplementation with biotin and chromium picolinate, used to prevent or treat chromium deficiency, may be a beneficial therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes (15, 16, 17, 18). However, several studies have reported that administration of chromium picolinate alone improves glycemic control in diabetic subjects (19).
Reductions in blood glucose levels were found in seven type 1 diabetics after one week of supplementation with 16,000 mcg of biotin daily (20).
Presently, studies of the effect of supplemental biotin on blood glucose levels in humans are extremely limited, highlighting the need for further research.
Brittle fingernails
Three uncontrolled trials examining the fingernail strengthening effects of vitamin B7 (biotin) supplementation (2.5 mg/day for up to six months) in women with brittle fingernails have been published (22, 23). In two of the trials, subjective evidence of clinical improvement was reported in 67–91% of the participants available for follow-up at the end of the treatment period (22). One trial that used scanning electron microscopy to assess fingernail thickness and splitting found that fingernail thickness increased by 25% and splitting decreased after biotin supplementation (23).
Although the results of these small uncontrolled trials suggest that vitamin B7 (biotin) supplements may be helpful in strengthening brittle nails, larger placebo-controlled trials are needed to assess efficacy.
Hair loss
There are no published scientific studies that support the claim that high-dose vitamin B7 (biotin) supplements are effective in preventing or treating hair loss in men or women.
Cradle cap
Infants who don't have enough biotin often develop a scaly scalp condition, known as ‘cradle cap’ (seborrheic dermatitis). Although no studies have confirmed that biotin supplements given in formula or breast milk effectively treat cradle cap, there are individual reports of some improvement with this treatment (24). Today’s modern medicine may not be the only hope in getting rid of pain. Herbal medicines are becoming more and more popular every day, and that is for a reason.
Herbal medicines are trusted to cure many ailments. Experts agree that there is a list of other positive uses such as reducing inflammation and reducing body toxin levels. But it this post we decided to share specific herbal medicines that act as pain killers.
Below are some of the most powerful options for natural pain relief:
1. Capsaicin (Chili Peppers)
chili-peppers
Capsaicin is a substance found in chili peppers which is literally responsible for the fireworks in your mouth when you bite one. “Capsaicin works by depleting Substance P, a compound that conveys the pain sensation from the peripheral to the central nervous system. It takes a couple of days for this to occur,” said David Kiefer, MD, assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine.
How to use it as a remedy:
For osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetic neuropathy, apply an over-the- counter cream containing 0.025 percent capsaicin to aching joints or feet 4 times a day for 3 to 4 weeks. About 40 percent of people who try this experience stinging, burning or skin redness at first, but these effects fade as capsaicin desensitizes nerves.
To treat colds, sprinkle chili (flakes, powder or finely chopped fresh chili) onto your food. The heat will stimulate drainage from the nasal and sinus passages.
When consumed fresh, chilies are considered to be a good source of Vitamin C. However, you should eat them in moderation, as eating big amounts may cause nausea, stomach pain or diarrhea.
2. Ginger
ginger
Ginger has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. According to a study by Dr. Krishna C. Srivastava, a world-renowned researcher on the effects of spices at Odense University of Denmark, Ginger is found to be an effective pain killer for treating arthritis. Daily consumption of ginger will significantly lower the pain, swelling and morning stiffness.
How to use it as a remedy:
The best way to consume ginger for pain relief is making a ginger tea.
3. Feverfew
feverfew
Even its name makes it obvious that feverfew is indeed a powerful natural pain killer. It is an affective cure for headaches, stomachaches and toothaches. Feverfew contains Parthenolide which is a chemical that decreases factors in the body that might cause migraine headaches.
How to use it as a remedy:
Consuming two to three of the bitter-tasting dried leaves each day constitutes a medicinal dosage. Limit consumption to a maximum of four or five leaves a day. Beware as mouth irritation may occur.
4. Devil’s claw
devils-claw
The name sounds scary right? Devil’s claw actually contains chemicals that might decrease inflammation and swelling and resulting pain. It is used for hardening of the arteries, arthritis, gout, muscle pain, back pain, tendonitis, chest pain, gastrointestinal upset or heart burn, fever, and migraine headaches. It is also used for difficulties in childbirth, menstrual problems, allergic reactions, loss of appetite, and kidney and bladder disease.
How to use it as a remedy:
Drink a strong decoction of Devil’s claw once a day for slow but steady relief of join pain caused by both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries and muscle pain.
Note: Devil’s claw is not recommended for those with an ulcer. High doses could interfere with blood pressure, heart, and diabetes medications.
5. Valerian Root
valerian-root
Valerian root is commonly used to aid in sleeping problems like insomnia, tension, and nervousness. This herbal medicine can also be used to cure spasms and muscle cramps. Also, many women claim that it helps them manage menstrual cramps and symptoms associated with menopause, including hot flashes and anxiety.
How to use it as a remedy:
Valerian root may be dried for teas or used fresh or dried for tinctures. The tincture method is found to be the most effective. Take 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon at a time. Take 3/4 to 1 teaspoon before bed time to deal with insomnia. Take one to three times a day for anxiety, tension, and high blood pressure. Start with a low dose and increase as needed.
A bathtub full of warm water with 2 cups of tea added is considered a soothing method to restore restful sleep.
Note: Valerian occasionally has the opposite effects of that intended, stimulating instead of sedating. When used for insomnia, in rare cases, valerian can cause morning grogginess in some people. Reducing the dosage usually alleviates the problem.

“Because it works” is not a good enough answer. Here’s why.

success-and-failure-signWhat is success in fundraising? And what is failure? That might seem a ridiculously simple and binary question with a ridiculously simple and binary answer: it’s what works, and what does not.
And yet it isn’t that simple, is it? It all depends on what you’re measuring. Where you start. What your target is and what it might take to reach it. How you compare with others.
The trauma that’s hit fundraising in the UK over the last year has raised a lot more questions, many of which don’t have easy answers but still have a bearing on what success looks like. If you aren’t from the UK, don’t be complacent. This is something where we’re just ahead of you, which could easily jump borders. Our Brexit won’t protect you.
“What works”, taken out the immediate metrics of response rates, average gifts, net income and ROIs, now has to answer “for whom”? Because it’s clear that a lot of fundraising activity has got a lot of people rather disenchanted with charities, and once they realised they weren’t alone in feeling that, they’ve been vocal about it.
The media has been awash with stories confirming their negative experiences of excessive mail, intrusive phone calls, and irritating face-to-face fundraising. Trust has fallen quite dramatically. Just last week, the UK Charity Commission issued a report showing trust in charities has fallen 15%, from a score of 6.7 out of 10 in 2014, to 5.7 out of 10 this year.
Fundraising isn’t working for donors, or the wider public. Ah, but we’re still getting good results, comes the reply. Who cares? It’s working for beneficiaries, for whom we raise the money, isn’t it? But at what cost, I’d ask? Do the ends justify the means? Is there longer-term and wider damage? It’s hard to say, because we enter territory without too many metrics (though initiatives like the Commission on the Donor Experience are working on that). We enter questions around ethics and values, and have to think about public perception and the risk of brand damage. We have to use judgement, as well as raw evidence. I’ve written here before on this question as it relates to the representation of those we serve. Some speculative wishful thinking is in order until we know more about the full impact we’re having.
There’s a commercial example in the UK right now. Tesco, the largest supermarket in the UK, has been selling a lot of its fresh food – meat, fruit and vegetables – under fictional farm brands. Essentially, these take advantage of the whole ‘buy local’ idea, with people imagining they get better quality and support local farmers at the same time, Even though much of the produce comes from as far and wide around the world as it ever did. Tesco says it works, that it’s making a difference to their bottom line. But is that ok, when it’s pretending to be something it’s not? Doesn’t that just eat further away at credibility, authenticity, and trust?
Our fundraising faces similar challenges. What’s really got the UK fundraising sector thinking is the question of the cumulative impact of fundraising on individuals. As single charities, we all make our own rational decisions. Everything ‘works’ in our own little world of metrics. We look after ‘our’ supporters with a view on how often it might be reasonable to contact them. But we forget that generous people support a lot of charities, and that adds up to a lot of contact.
What we’re dealing here is an example of ‘the tragedy of the commons – that economic theory that explains how the rational decision-making of everyone in a community, can lead to the destruction of the common resource. (For example, pastoralists all increasing their herds of goats, leading to overgrazing of fragile land, and ecological disaster). Sixteen years ago, the UK fundraising sector set up a regulatory body to manage face to face fundraising, managing and allocating street sites in conjunction with local authorities, specifically to avoid a gold rush that would lead to the end for everyone. It really hasn’t done a bad job.
And now we are faced with whether we have been doing this with everything else. Is our fundraising activity sustainable? Is it ‘working’ for the sector at large? Is it working for our future, in terms of public trust, supporter relationships, and longer-term income?
Copy Copy CopyAll of this provoked a great debate recently about innovation and best practice: Joe Jenkins asked whether our sector’s culture of sharing and copying was contributing to the homogenisation of fundraising, a reduction to the lowest common denominator. Claire Axelrad responded, arguing that sharing and copying spread best practice that raised more money. A cry of “it works”? Maybe. I’ve complained on SOFII (“it won’t work here”) about fundraisers’ reluctance to learn and copy. Copying is the greatest form of flattery, and the quickest way to innovation success (as laid out in Mark Earl’s fun book, “Copy, Copy, Copy”, but the trick of course, is to adapt what you see and learn to work for you, and do it differently, as Derek Humphries nicely summed up (“Don’t cut and paste”). I think we’d all agree with that.
Joe’s is an important challenge, to think about how we forge new paths to keep things fresh and not destroy our ‘commons’ before their time. Claire’s is an important argument too. Not all charities have the resources to test and innovate, and rely on watching those that do, and copying what they hear is best practice. “What works”. It’s all part of our fundraising ecology.
Oxfam water pack outerWhich reminds me of my biggest direct mail failure, which I’m happy to share. At Oxfam we had a very successful direct mail pack for new supporter recruitment. It had been working for ten years, beating every new idea we tested against it. Determined to crack it, we put our agency on the case, with two creative teams and a whirl through their innovation hothouse. We deconstructed all we knew made a difference to results – engagement devices that were relevant to the brand story, and tactile, the latest on format design. We spent more time on it than on any other creative development. Whatever. God knows how we ended up with this. It bombed, as common sense should have told us it would. (We did beat that pack in the end).
Does my challenge that “because it works’ is no longer a good enough answer, change the importance of testing, learning and improving? No, of course not. It’s just that the question “what works?” has got a whole lot bigger, and we’ve all got to pay attention to that. It’s not just about the numbers. Public trust is our lifeblood, more than the money, for without it, the money won’t follow. Public trust is our common good, and that’s what we all have to look after. Including you.
As the Lorax said: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better, it’s not.
While no one goes around trying to consume things that will make them ill, the truth of the matter is, there are many unnatural products out there that can wreak havoc on our health. The American Institute for Cancer even states on their website that, “of the most common US cancers, about one third of the cases are preventable through a healthy diet, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight. This translates to approximately 350,000 preventable cases of cancer this year.”

While cancer can feel like an inescapable disease, it’s helpful to know there are steps you can take to minimize your risk of developing it. But first, you need to know about the following 10 toxins to avoid:
1. Processed Meats
From hot dogs, sausages, and bacon to most luncheon meats, processed meats contain chemicals and excessive amounts of salt that damage your health. A study published in the journal BMC Medicine found an overwhelming association between processed meat and cardiovascular disease and cancer.
“Overall, we estimate that 3% of premature deaths each year could be prevented if people ate less than 20g processed meat per day,” explained Prof Sabine Rohrmann from the University of Zurich, who led this analysis.
2. BPA-Lined Cans
BPA, which stands for bisphenol A, is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. Found in hard plastics and resins, and used to coat metal cans, research has linked BPA to cancer, infertility, diabetes, and obesity.
3. Cured And Smoked Foods
Smoked and cured foods often use nitrites and nitrates to act as preservatives and prevent food from spoiling, but when cooked, those chemicals change into byproducts called N-nitroso compounds, such as nitrosamines and nitrosamides. One study, for instance, of nearly 10,000 adult males and a 24-year follow-up, revealed a relationship between sodium nitrates from smoked fish and colorectal cancer.
4. Microwave Popcorn
Microwave popcorn is a convenient and relatively healthy snack, but the bag it comes in is another story. Many microwave popcorn bags are lined with a chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (or PFOA). This toxin has been found to significantly increase the risk of breast, bladder, kidney, prostate, thyroid, colorectal, lung, leukemia, and lymphoma cancers.
5. GMOs
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) have infiltrated our food supply and become quite controversial. One study found that Roundup-treated GM corn as well as the herbicide used on it increases cancer in rats. Glyphosate—the main ingredient in Monsanto’s widely used herbicide Roundup—has been exposed as a potential endocrine disruptor, which can cause cancer tumors.
6. Sugar
Sugar continues to negatively impact our diet, as we fight to find ways to keep it out while still enjoying sweet sensations. Cancer cells thrive on sugar, as well as any food that converts to sugar, like grains, pastas, carbs, breads, and many fruits. Eliminating sugar is key. One study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center found that diets high in sugar are a major risk factor for certain types of cancers, especially breast cancer.
7. Hydrogenated Oils
Also known as trans-fats, hydrogenated oils are a man-made product whose chemical structure has been altered to increase shelf life. Chemicals are also used to mask the odor and change the taste of the oil. Research has confirmed that hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils present in industrial processed food double the risk of breast cancer.
8. Sodas
Sodas are filled with loads of added sugar and empty calories. Linked to weight gain, inflammation, and insulin resistance, they also contain a slew of artificial colorings and chemicals foreign to the body. This makes it no surprise that research has linked drinking soda to a higher risk of cancer, including pancreatic cancer.
9. Soy Protein Isolate
While unprocessed soybeans offer individuals an excellent source of protein, among other things, 90-95 percent of U.S.-grown soybeans, used to create soy protein isolate, have been genetically modified to withstand herbicides. Soy protein isolates are known to contain anti-nutrients that can hinder the body’s ability to digest food and absorb the nutrients into the bloodstream. Foods high in isoflavones—which are weak estrogen-like compounds—like soy protein isolate, have also been found to promote the development, growth, and spread of breast cancers in some individuals.
10. White Flour
Commercially-grown grains like white flour start off as seeds that are treated with fungicide. The plants are then sprayed with pesticides, harvested, and stored in bins coated with insecticides—all of which increase toxicity. Grains are then processed using high temperatures and high speed rollers, often using chlorine oxide as a whitener. The end result is a starch absent of nutrients, rich in toxins, and potentially carcinogenic. Scientific evidence indicates that bleached white flour significantly raises the risk of lung cancer as well.

Asking some important questions about your bowel movements might give you some insight into your gastrointestinal health. Bowel movements are the end result of your body taking the nutrients it needs from the food you eat and eliminating what’s left.
1. HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR STOOL?
Most of us don’t really see what we left behind in the toilet, but just flush it down. In today’s article we will discuss how just a glimpse at the stool we can understand our health status. Knowing this can save your life.
2. TEXTURES OF POOP
– Separate hard lumps, like nuts
This indicates that you need to drink more water and consume more fruits and vegetables. You need more fiber and fluids.
Sausage-shaped, smooth and soft
This is a good sign.
– Watery, no solid pieces, all liquid
A case of diarrhea. There is a big chance infection caused this occurrence. It is advisable to drink more fluids so you can replace the lost ones, if not you might face dehydration.
– Sausage- shaped but lumpy
You should consume more fluids and fiber, such a case is not serious.
– Soft blobs with clear-cut edges
If you visit the bathroom multiple times for this reason, it is totally normal.
– Sausage-shaped but with cracks on surface
Even though this occurrence is normal, it is advisable to consume more water.
– Fluffy pieces with ragged edges, a mushy stool
This type of stool is on the edge of normal, it is on its way to become diarrhea.
– Soft and sticks to the side of the toilet bowl
Because of too much oil, the body can’t absorb the fats properly.
3. SHADE OF POOP
– Brown
The natural color should be brown due to the bile produced in your liver. It means you are doing fine.
– Green
This might be the case if you eat too much green leafy veggies or green food coloring. The food might be going through your large intestine too quickly.
– Yellow
This is an indication of excess fat. His is because of malabsorption disorder like celiac disease.
– Black
Black stool can be a sign of ulcer or cancer and it indicate that you are bleeding internally. The reason can be numerous; it might be the case of some vitamins that contain iron or bismuth subsalicylate. But either way you should definitely see a doctor.
– Light-colored, white or clay-colored
This could mean a bile duct obstruction. It is probably a case of some medication you’re taking. It is advisable to see a doctor.
– Blood-stained or red
– If you see blood in your poop, it can be a symptom of cancer. See a doctor if you find blood in your stool.
4. QUICK FACTS ABOUT POOP
– The food you consume usually takes 1-3 days from the time you eat it till it ends up in your poop.
– Poop is made up of bacteria, undigested food, dead cells, and mucus.
– Healthy poop sinks slowly.
– How often should you poop?
There is no number that indicates how much times you need to relieve yourself in the bathroom. It is most usual for people to go 1-2 a day.
How to keep poop healthy?
Dietary fiber can help you in case of problems with the stool.
The proper hydration helps ensure your colon is slippery enough for the poop to move through.
If you notice some symptoms out of the ordinary in your poop, and they persist then you should visit your doctor.
We must pay attention to what our body is telling us.
According to the American Cancer Society, there will be 95,270 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in the United States this year. Most patients are treated with surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy, all of which come with significant side effects. What if there was a safer, more natural treatment? According to a recent study, that’s exactly what researchers believe they’ve found.
It’s no secret that coconut oil possesses some amazing health benefits. Some consider organic virgin coconut oil to be a superfood. Lauric acid — the component in coconut oil that is believed to have anti-cancer properties — is also typically found in breast milk. It’s a medium-chain fatty acid that supports the immune system, providing plenty of antimicrobial properties.coconut oil
Coconut oil is basically pro-health and anti-everything bad. It tops the list of anti-inflammatory foods, and it’s also anti-bacterial, anti-carcinogenic, anti-fungal, anti-microbial,anti-viral, and has antioxidant properties. Coconut oil can help stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels, lower your risk of heart disease, kill candida and other harmful fungi, and it can even help you maintain a healthy weight.
Coconut Oil and Colon Cancer
According to a study published in the journal Cancer Research, the lauric acid in coconut oil has anti-cancer properties. Lauric acid constitutes about 50% of coconut oil, and researchers at the University of Adelaide discovered that it completely exterminated more than 90% of colon cancer cells after just two days of treatment in a colon cancer cell line in vitro. Researchers also cited other studies that support their findings.
During in vitro studies, researchers are conducting their experiments in a petrie dish, or performing the procedure in a controlled environment, outside of a living organism. In vivo studies are those in which researchers perform their experiments on whole, living organisms. The coconut oil and colon cancer study was performed in vitro, which may cause some to discount the findings. Performing more research costs money — lots of money — which is hard for researchers to come by without a pharmaceutical company backing them.
According to the American Society for Nutrition, clinical studies have shown that the fats found in coconut oil (medium-chain fatty acids) “may be useful in treating and preventing diseases such as osteoporosis, virus-related diseases (mononucleosis, hepatitis C, herpes, etc.), gallbladder disease, Chrohn’s disease and cancer.”Coconut oil has previously been shown to help decrease the harmful side effects of chemotherapy, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.colon cancer
Further Coconut Oil Research
The medium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil have also been credited with treating Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, drug resistant epilepsy, and diabetes. When Dr. Mary Newport began giving her husband a daily dose of coconut oil, his Alzheimer’s symptoms improved drastically over the course of just 60 days. She explained, “Ketone bodies may help the brain recover after a loss of oxygen in newborns through adults, may help the heart recover after an acute attack, and may shrink cancerous tumors.”
